Finally if you need to record a tape (or a CD copy) for your car system, try to enhance the band extremes that are normally sacrificed by the ambient noise and adda some 50msec of delay.
More you can so finely adjust the tonal balance that bass, mis bass, mid, mid treble, and treble band start to have a sense in the relationhip with male / female voice and different instruments permitting to evaluate the effect and refine your hearing capability. Combining the parametric effects (checked with acccurate listening at +/- 1 dB step!) is useful for Lpad crossover adjustment and for the understanding of cross frequencies problems. I hasten to add here that its best is brought out with SMALL step adjustments, backed by much patience and even more try-and-see attempts, and it's all too easy to overdo it.Įnancing or reducing a certain frequency with the hi Q notch filter permit to check the flatness of response of the system up to the ambient and to understand, if you are a serious DIY, where is better to put your effort and your money in order to improve the performances. By far the best thing about it is the spatializer - it cannot bring to life otherwise dead recordings, nor can it return grossly lost ambience, but it fairly surprised me how much better, how much more true to life recording can be. If you can get hold of its schematics, you might also investigate a better power supply as a whole, using quality capacitors, not to mention changing critical resistors, and such like.
Note also that its power supply is split up - the small line filter and power transformer occupy a separate board - ideal to change it to something more serious, using a decent toroidal transformer. It's a tweaker's joy, with all those el cheapo ICs for op amps. That said, don't raise your hopes too high - if there's a basic deficiency in your system, the best you can hope for is to cleverly conceal, but not remedy it.
